THE DEMOLITION MEN
THE DEMOLITION MEN
The Demolition Men have the Bay Area mixtape scene on lock. Though there are other successful, talented and known DJ’s that do mixtapes in the Bay, none of them are quite like the Demolition Men. Known for their hustle, this mixtape DJ duo, comprised of DJ Impereal and DJ Devro, didn’t get known because they were on the radio or constantly DJing at the hottest clubs in the Bay; they put themselves on by creating a good product and taking it directly to their customers, whether it be in Fisherman’s Wharf of San Francisco, on International Blvd. in Oakland, or the tailgate parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum. After doing that for 3 years and releasing 36 mixtapes including 9 Bay Area mixtapes, the Demolition Men can finally stand with Bay Area rap stars knowing that they have put in the work to feel comfortable calling themselves: the Bay Area Mixtape Kings.
In the late 90’s when the battle DJ scene was dying in NY and LA, Impereal and Devro began looking for something or somewhere new. Both of them found it in the Bay Area where the DJ scene was at its peak and being considered the place where all the dope new styles of Djing were coming from. Impereal left the Queens and Devro left Southern Cali in search tapping this resource in the Bay. By 2002 the Bay Area DJ scene was weakening and the local rap scene was lacking the support of the DJ’s. This was when the Demolition Men found their place, turning to mixtapes; borrowing the idea from the already thriving scene in NY. They began by doing mixtapes of hit songs that the people love and progressed into doing mixtapes hosted by major label artists (such as David Banner and Graph). After building their name in the streets and with local artists, they began including Bay Area rappers’ songs on their mixtapes and eventually evolved into doing mixtapes strictly dedicated to Bay Area hits (ie. Nothin’ But Slaps) as well as local artist driven mixtapes (such as the Husalah & Jacka’s – Animal Planet). Now they are known across the West Coast for their work and posses the ability to break new artists.
The future is bright for the Bay Area Mixtape Kings. Watch out and listen up.
